Pea plants are sneaky. They grow and unfurl and attach to themselves and pieces of string. For weeks they don't get much taller. They don't blossom when you expect them to. You expect them to die before they blossom and fruit, and plan how to deliver the sad news to the kids. But then, they surprise you. They double their height.

Thanks boys for caring about the life-cycle of a plant and remembering to water the herbs and veg! Thanks Science Night at SBISD! Thanks Auntie and Uncle for the pea plant survival 101 course! Thanks hubby for procurement of supplies and repotting! The Peppers just grew their first veggie ever. Yum. Crunch. Happy day.
Congrats on your snow pea plant! I had grand plans of planting a veggie garden when I moved into my new house...only to realize my backyard is way too shady. Enjoy some for me!
ReplyDelete(mostly) - our back yard is too shady too. These pea plants are in a pot on our front step. we're in a town house so no yard to speak of. anything we grow has to be in a pot.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea of growing them in a pot! I am a container gardener at the moment as well while I figure out where to put some raised beds. How is it that you already have peas to harvest? Here in Ohio, we're just putting plants and seeds in the groun.
ReplyDeleteI used to pick snow peas in my Papa's garden when I was a little girl. It's one of my fondest memories. My oldest and I have been picking beans and eating them off the bush in the backyard this month. However, the bell peppers and zucchini are a great disappointment! Way too small!
ReplyDelete@sally in houston it's been spring since feb. by aug it will be too hot for most plants except okra to survive.
ReplyDeleteI loved growing our own peas last year and we're hoping for it to go as well this year...but we had to fight green bugs all over them often. Did you have any of this? What did you fight them with? -Amanda Y. (ayyogurt)(at)(yahoo)
ReplyDelete@amanda Y I haven't seen any green bugs yet, but I'll keep my eyes out. this really is my first time growing veggies so i don't know how to keep the bugs away.
ReplyDeleteJenna, you will love having your own garden. Try planting some letus in pots also or spinach I think both of those work great.
ReplyDeleteMy kids love growing "snack" veggies in our backyard. They can pull grape tomatoes, hood strawberries and sugar snap peas right from the vine while they play. In fact, we rarely actually bring them in the house since the kids eat so much!
ReplyDeleteGrowing a garden of fruits and vegetables with our kids is one of our favorite seasonal activities.
